The Northeast Region has initiated a Climate Change Steering Committee that is promoting a sustainable building initiative along with energy audits, for all covered facilities. Also, parks in the Northeast Region are being directed to enter the Climate Friendly Parks Program and to establish regional Green Teams.

Both the Secretary of the Interior and the Director of the National Park Service have mandated youth programs as a high priority, calling for an increase in employment opportunities for youth in the Bureau by 60% this fiscal year. They have also directed the NPS to engage youth in resource and energy conservation efforts.

  1. This photo was taken at the end of the day on Wednesday, August 4th, in the barn of the Ranger Station at Valley Forge. This was the exact middle of the program, since it was the middle of the fourth week out of a seven week program (I'm counting the two weeks of training and five weeks of weatherizing and outreach). I think that (and most of the crew will agree) that this was the hardest physical work day. Not only was it extremely hot (mid 90s, high humidity) but the work was challenging and lengthy - installing insulation in the ceiling of the lower part of the Ranger Station barn. This picture does not seem too unflattering, considering the context of the day. I have yet to see the other picture taken just after this one.
